Cream Tees are M@HoT’s
award-winning youth band.
They meet at TCR Hub in Barnard Castle to learn traditional music from across the UK and further afield.

JAMMING SESSIONS

Led by Project Coordinator Rupert Philbrick, and supported by student tutors from Newcastle University’s Folk & Traditional Music Degree, M@HoT provides a safe and supportive environment in which to improve at your instrument, learn new music, and work together with like-minded young people in creating arrangements.

Jamming sessions happen weekly during term time, every Thursday from 4 - 5:30pm. These form the basis of Cream Tees activity, supported by masterclasses and workshops from visiting musicians.

MUSIC MASTERCLASSES

Each term, the band work with a professional folk musician, learning tunes, techniques, and developing ideas and arrangements together as a group.

Over the last 18 months, Cream Tees have worked closely with Newcastle-based melodeon player Dave Gray [Varldens Band, Katie Doherty & the Navigators], injecting an awesome amount of energy and enthusiasm into the music the band play.

The team strives to develop an exciting masterclass programme, working with touring musicians with a range of styles and repertoires.

FESTIVALS AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Cream Tees are no strangers to the stages of the UK Folk Festival scene, having been invited to play at Hartlepool, Towersey and Sidmouth Folk Festival over the last 7 years. Now approaching our 3rd visit, Whitby Folk Week quickly became a favourite for the band, so much so it’s officially become our home festival!

Outside of the festival season, Cream Tees have lots of opportunities to perform, from collaborations with Opera North and the Durham Music Service, as well as local concerts and special events..

In 2021, with live music still impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, Cream Tees were invited to participate in Whitby Folk Week’s ‘Whitby at Home’. The band created a live recording, which was then streamed to the Whitby audiences online. To see what we got up to, check out the videos below!

In 2020, with live music being impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, Cream Tees were invited to participate in Whitby Folk Week’s ‘Whitby at Home’. We created compilation videos of our members playing from their homes, which were then streamed to the Whitby audiences online. To see what we got up to, check out the videos below!

“Being part of Cream Tees improved my teamwork and listening skills, gave me ideas on how to arrange and link tunes, and gives me lots of practice at learning music by ear.”
